How it began

Winfield Baptist Church was planted December 24th, 1868, by three families who moved here from the Briar Creek area of Columbia County.

On January 27th, 1869, 23 individuals were baptized.  On February 11th, 1869, 15 more were baptized.

On March 6th, 1869, the church gathered to organize and covenant together. They received 79 individuals into the church family.

Between 1869 to 1965 the church had various pastors for relatively short seasons.

In 1965 Dr. John Thornbury became the senior pastor and served for 44 years until 2009.

During Dr. Thornbury’s ministry he wrote 7 books, wrote a weekly news article called Gems of Truth, and saw the church grow to over 300.

The church built a new sanctuary in 1971, and then later expanded in 1986 to our current facility.

In October of 2009 Corey Mitchell became senior pastor.
